Before we went on vacation, my skating coach gave me a test. When I was still in the Learn to Skate program I had passed tests for levels 1-4. The test Kiara gave me was on Pumps and Pushes.

I had to do both forward and backward swizzles, rocking horse,  curves, slalom, 1/2 swizzle pumps, both forward and backward, in both directions, forward stroking, both forward and backward crossovers and backward stroking.

I realize that it is difficult to write about my skating because not everyone will understand the terms and I am having trouble finding descriptions to link to. I apologize if this post is confusing.

The scoring system was check +: “performed skill with speed and ease. Expectation met beyond passing standard.” A check meant “performed skill with minimum requirements for passing.” Check  meant performed skill but not quite at passing standard.” Learn to skate tests were just pass or fail so this is a more nuanced system.

For the most part, the skills that I had already passed in learn to skate were the ones where I got check +. That means I now do them better than I did when I first passed. Backward skating is what I am least good at and my marks reflected that. I really liked getting tested because it enabled me to see my progress and gain a better sense of what I have to work on. The next test will be on glides.

This is a video from September of me skating.  (I couldn’t figure out how to embed the video. If someone could tell me how to do it, I would really appreciate it). I have improved since then. I will have to ask Kiara to video me again and then post it.
